At Dublin District Coroner’s Court on 11 January 2024, forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd told the Stardust inquest that delayed escape from the fire’s toxic environment increased the chances of death.
He said people who escaped sooner would more likely have suffered less damage; the fire consumed the Artane nightclub in Dublin in 1981.
The inquest was examining how 48 people died, the extent of their injuries and how their remains were identified.
