Siobhan Maguire was jailed for four years for theft and fraud at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 26 October 2017. She stole more than €1 million from employers by lodging 660 cheques into her personal account over 14 years.
Maguire pleaded guilty to 32 sample charges involving €1,187,616, with the offences occurring between 2001 and 2015. Judge Patricia Ryan ordered the four-year sentences on each count to run concurrently, while noting her early plea, cooperation, lack of previous convictions and genuine remorse accepted by the prosecution.
The fraud was uncovered after a bank employee became suspicious of cheques lodged through self-service machines in Smithfield, Dublin. Her former employers were partly reimbursed, leaving an outstanding loss of approximately €325,000.
