Shane McKeever was jailed for four and a half years and disqualified from driving for six years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to endangerment, car theft, failure to provide a sample and driving without insurance in Clondalkin on 11 October 2018. The proceedings were reported on 20 November 2019.

McKeever stole Thomas Stephens’ vehicle and drove it against a wall, pinning Stephens and crushing his ankle. Stephens was treated for a triple fracture. Garda Mark Walsh said McKeever drove off and crashed into a recycling truck on the M50 ten minutes later.

Judge Martin Nolan said McKeever had intended to take the car but had difficulty starting and driving it, resulting in Stephens being pinned. The judge said he had no doubt McKeever had not intended to injure Stephens, who was left in great distress and pain and required multiple surgeries. The judge took account of McKeever’s remorse and his steps to address his addiction.
