By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Sean McGovern was sentenced to 24 years in prison at the Special Criminal Court for directing a criminal organisation in connection with the murder of Noel Kirwan and the surveillance of James Gately. The court ordered consecutive sentences of 14 years for the Kirwan offence and 10 years for the Gately offence, after reductions for his guilty pleas. The sentence was backdated to October 2024, when he had been in custody since his arrest in Dubai.

McGovern pleaded guilty in March 2026 to both charges. The court heard that he directed the organisation’s activities in relation to Kirwan’s murder and Gately’s surveillance in preparation for an indictable offence. The sentence followed the guilty pleas.
