This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Sean Farrell’s conviction for IRA membership was quashed by the Court of Criminal Appeal on 10 April 2014. He had been convicted at the Special Criminal Court in December 2012 of membership on 7 July 2011. The appeal court found that the trial court failed to disregard evidence from a Garda chief superintendent, which had not been notified to the defence. The DPP opposed the appeal, but Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman dismissed an application for a retrial, finding it would be oppressive. Farrell had served two years and three months of his five-year sentence before the conviction was quashed.
