Sean Dunne was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two and a half years in prison, with the final six months suspended. The sentence was backdated to April 2023 for time spent in custody. The proceedings were reported on 18 November 2024.

Dunne pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm against a man and a woman visiting from the United States. The assaults took place on 7 April 2023 at the Ashling Hotel on Parkgate Street, Dublin.

Garda Stephen Lawlor agreed with defence counsel that Dunne had exhibited signs of someone going through a psychotic break. The court heard that Dunne had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2020 and that his mental health had improved significantly since he went into custody. He was on medication, off addictive substances and being tested regularly in prison.

Ms Justice Sarah Berkeley noted the schizophrenia diagnosis but also said Dunne had chosen to use illicit substances. She placed the offending in the middle upper range and took account of his guilty plea.

The judge ordered Dunne to engage with probation services, undergo 18 months of post-release supervision, follow treatment and probation recommendations, and keep probation services informed of his contact details and whereabouts.
