Seán Casey jailed for dangerous driving causing death

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Seán Casey was sentenced to five years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended, by the Court of Appeal on 17 November 2015. The sentence followed a dangerous-driving crash at Skibbereen on 8 April 2013 that killed Megan Johnston and left Kate Petford paralysed.

Casey had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing Johnston’s death and causing serious bodily harm to Petford. He had originally received seven years at Cork Circuit Criminal Court and was disqualified from driving for 30 years.

The Court of Appeal found the original sentence was out of line with other dangerous-driving cases. It reduced the term to five years but left the driving disqualification unchanged.
