Sandra Higgins jury sworn for baby harm trial

By Orla Quinn

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Sandra Higgins had a jury sworn in for her baby-harm trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 15 January 2018. She denies intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to a baby at her Cavan home on 28 March 2012.

The case was the second retrial, after two earlier trials received media coverage. The jury was told the prosecution alleges that the ten-month-old baby had non-accidental injuries and that Higgins assaulted the child. Evidence was expected from civilian and garda witnesses from Cavan, with the defence possibly calling a paediatrician from Wales. The trial was expected to last two weeks.
