Ruzmond Muwaniri remanded ahead of sentencing for assaults

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Ruzmond Muwaniri pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to two men at separate locations on 9 March and 21 May 2015. The proceedings were reported on 16 February 2017.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Muwaniri, who suffers from schizophrenia, had missed several appointments to have his medication injected around the time of the assaults. Judge Melanie Greally adjourned the case in custody until the following month to seek guidance on establishing a dedicated care package.

Garda Dolores Walsh told the court that a 67-year-old cyclist was punched by Muwaniri on Cheeverstown Road in Tallaght. The man was knocked off his bicycle, lost consciousness and was treated for a broken eye socket, cuts and bruises.

The report said Muwaniri was identified on CCTV footage. Walsh agreed that he had told gardaí he did not remember anything and would not have done anything like that; he also said he felt bad looking at pictures of the man’s injuries.

The report said Muwaniri had also punched another man in the face and smashed his teeth because he mistakenly believed the man was racially abusing him. Defence counsel Pieter Le Vert told the court that Muwaniri would eventually return to the community after serving his sentence and would need multidisciplinary support.

Muwaniri had 60 previous convictions, including several for assault.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
