Ruth Barry lost her appeal against conviction for serious assault and robbery in the Court of Appeal, reported on 16 February 2015. The offences arose on O’Connell Street, Dublin, on 25 June 2010.
Barry had been convicted of cutting Jennifer Bray’s face and causing serious injury, along with robbery, using a blade and assaulting one of Bray’s companions. She received a seven-year sentence, with the final 18 months suspended, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 26 July 2012.
The Court of Appeal rejected the argument that the trial was unfair because a witness was absent. The court held that the proposed evidence did not undermine Barry’s involvement in the joint enterprise, and she was returned to prison to serve the remainder of her sentence.
