Roy Webster's murder conviction appeal dismissed

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Roy Webster's appeal against his murder conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, reported on 20 December 2019. The conviction concerned the hammer attack on Anne Shortall at The Murrough near Wicklow Town on 3 April 2015.

Webster had been convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury and received the mandatory life sentence on 24 March 2017. The appeal argued that the trial judge had inadequately explained provocation and the intention required for murder.

The Court of Appeal rejected those criticisms and upheld the conviction. The report said Webster would continue serving his life sentence.
