Robbie Walsh denies murdering Karl Haugh in Kilkee in the summer of 2017. The proceedings were reported on 5 February 2019.

The prosecution case is that Walsh stabbed Haugh once in the back at the Marian estate in Kilkee during the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2017.

The court heard that Haugh, 25, was taken to University Hospital Limerick with a stab injury at around 1am. He sat up, talked to his family and reassured them he would be okay. His family were then told he would be transferred to Cork and headed there.

Consultant surgeon David Waldron told the jury he was phoned at 4am and informed that a patient who had initially stabilised had become unstable. Resuscitation efforts stopped after an hour and Haugh was pronounced dead.

Waldron said that, in his opinion, a leak of air would have led to a clot and then a bleed, with Haugh deteriorating quickly. Under cross-examination, he agreed that it was an unexpected chain of events.
