Richard O’Mara’s rape conviction appeal dismissed

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Richard O’Mara’s appeal against his rape convictions was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 27 September 2021. He had been convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury in April 2019 on two counts of rape and was sentenced by Ms Justice Tara Burns to 14 years’ imprisonment, with the final two years suspended on strict conditions.

O’Mara had pleaded not guilty. His appeal argued that Gardaí failed to examine the scene, but Ms Justice Úna Ní Raifeartaigh found the investigation and trial had not crossed the legal threshold for intervention, and upheld the convictions.
