Richard O’Brien was jailed for life for rape at the Central Criminal Court on 15 May 2023. The sentence followed his conviction for offences against five relatives over four decades.

A jury convicted O’Brien of 63 counts of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault against his two sisters, niece and two daughters, for offences between 1975 and 2011. The abuse of his sisters and niece took place at the family home on O’Moore Road, Ballyfermot.

The court imposed concurrent sentences totalling 11 years for the other offences, to run from when O’Brien entered custody in March. The judge noted the profound harm to the victims and his lack of remorse.
