Richard McGreevy was jailed for three and a half years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with the final 15 months suspended on strict conditions, for threats to kill or cause harm to Mary Lou McDonald and Drew Harris.
The sentencing proceedings were reported on 26 March 2025.
McGreevy pleaded guilty to two counts of making a threat to kill or cause harm. He entered the pleas by video link at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 12 December 2024, when Judge Orla Crowe remanded him in custody for sentence.
The court heard that McGreevy posted the threatening TikTok videos on 16 July 2024. They were viewed thousands of times and reposted to Facebook and X.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, McDonald said she had been afraid and angry and that the threat caused her distress and anxiety. She said she would not allow a bully to stop her doing her job. Harris declined to provide a victim impact statement, saying his complaint captured the impact on him.
McGreevy told gardaí he had not intended the video to go viral and had taken it down. He expressed shame and remorse, saying he had not meant for anyone to feel hurt or threatened but had wanted to rant. His defence counsel, James Dwyer SC, said he had acted from impulse rather than malice and had failed to realise the impact of his actions.
Judge Martin Nolan described the threats as extreme and frightening and imposed the sentence.
