Richard Coghlan received a fully suspended two-and-a-half-year sentence for possessing child abuse images at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 28 March 2017. The court heard that 325 images were found on his computers after an investigation into downloads linked to his internet address.
Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence on strict conditions. He said the number of images was relatively low compared with other cases and noted that Coghlan had no previous convictions and had not reoffended in the seven years since he was caught.
The sentence followed Coghlan's guilty plea to possessing the images on 21 September 2010. The report said the images fell into several categories of seriousness, including 98 in the second-highest category.
