This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Raymond O'Neill was on life support on the night of 25 October 2016 after taking an overdose in his cell at Midlands Prison on 21 October 2016.

He had been due to attend extradition proceedings at the High Court in Dublin on 21 October 2016, the day of the overdose. The court was informed that illness would prevent his appearance. The proceedings were reported on 26 October 2016.

Prison staff discovered him unconscious in his cell. The report described the overdose as involving a mixture of drugs and said he was believed to have taken illegal drugs as well as prescription medicine.

Northern Ireland authorities sought his extradition to face murder and arson charges concerning the death of Jennifer Dornan at her home in Lagmore, west Belfast, in August. He was also accused of attempted murder relating to neighbours who narrowly avoided injury when the fire reached their property.
