Prince Aibangbe was jailed for dangerous driving causing death at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 17 June 2020, receiving three years with the final two suspended. The collision happened at the junction of Swords Road and Collins Avenue in Dublin 9 on 31 May 2019.
Judge Pauline Codd also disqualified Aibangbe from driving for six years. He had pleaded guilty to the offence, after fatally striking 21-year-old Gerard Whyte while moving from a stopped position at the crossroads.
The judge said the sentence was required as a deterrent to drivers of large vehicles and said they had a greater duty to watch for pedestrians and cyclists.
