Petronel Pal loses bail appeal over murder charges

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

PETRONEL PAL lost his bail appeal over aggravated murder charges at the Court of Appeal on 27 June 2019. The charges relate to alleged offences in Navan, including the death of Virgil Busa after an April 2014 attack.

Pal was wanted in Romania for prosecution on charges including organised crime, aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. The court held that the seriousness of the allegations, his previous convictions and other factors created a substantial risk that he would abscond if released.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal against the High Court’s refusal to grant bail. Pal remained entitled to the presumption of innocence while contesting his surrender at a section 16 hearing before the High Court.
