Peter Mulryan seeks Tuam records from Tusla in High Court

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Peter Mulryan’s bid to have Tusla records examined for information about his sister was before the High Court for a fourth time. The proceedings were reported on 7 March 2017.

Mulryan sought information about Marian Bridget Mulryan, whose birth and death certificates had been found by local historian Catherine Corless. The death certificate recorded that she died at nine months old after an hour and a half of convulsions.

Tusla’s lawyers said that information they knew about Mulryan’s family had already been handed to him. They said Tusla held an enormous quantity of documents, including substantial material from the Bon Secours, and did not forensically examine the records.

The report said it was suggested in the High Court that Mulryan or his lawyer go through the files themselves. Mulryan said they would not know what to look for and could not go through other people’s files.

His solicitor, Kevin Higgins, argued that there could be no certainty about Marian’s fate in light of what he described as evidence of widespread child trafficking at the Tuam home. The report said the case was due before the court again on 27 February, without specifying a year.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
