Paul O’Brien was sentenced to 240 hours of community service for copyright infringement at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 27 April 2023.
He pleaded guilty to three sample counts involving possession and sale of devices that enabled access to TV channels. The offences occurred between June 2016 and December 2017.
The community service was ordered instead of two years’ imprisonment. The judge had referred the case to the probation service to assess O’Brien’s suitability, and finalised the sentence after he was deemed eligible.
The judge also ordered forfeiture of €20,410 and destruction of the seized equipment.
