By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Paul Murphy's trial for falsely imprisoning Joan Burton and Karen O’Connell reached closing arguments, reported on 20 June 2017.

The prosecution alleged that the women’s liberty was totally restrained when cars they occupied were surrounded during a Jobstown protest on 15 November 2014.

Defence counsel argued that Murphy supported a peaceful protest and had not encouraged violence or imprisonment. The jury was due to hear the remaining defence closing arguments before receiving legal directions.
