Paul Flaherty resentenced to 2.5 years for sexual assault

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Paul Flaherty was resentenced to two-and-a-half years for sexual assault by the Court of Appeal on 24 October 2019. The offence occurred at his home in Tallaght, Dublin, in 2015.

The court had upheld Flaherty’s conviction but found that the original five-year sentence was excessive for the circumstances. The appeal court said the offence was serious, while noting that a five-year term was more typical of a sexual assault forming part of wider and greater sexual misconduct. Flaherty had no previous convictions for sexual offences, and the court imposed the reduced sentence after considering positive testimonials.
