Paul Cuddihy was found not guilty by reason of insanity of murder at the Central Criminal Court on 4 November 2016. The jury also reached the same verdict on four assault-causing-harm charges involving hospital residents and nurses at St Otteran’s Hospital in Waterford.
The jury found that Cuddihy, who had paranoid schizophrenia, was suffering a psychotic episode when Maria O’Brien was stabbed more than 100 times. He was committed to the Central Mental Hospital, with a return to court scheduled for 14 November for a doctor to outline his continued treatment plan.
