Patryk Krupa’s murder trial heard evidence at the Central Criminal Court on 11 April 2016 that he drowned after a violent assault. He was found in the Shannon at Bogganfin, Athlone, after suffering severe head injuries.

State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy told the court that Mr Krupa was alive when he entered the water and that his brain trauma likely left him unable to resist. Two men charged with his murder and false imprisonment had pleaded not guilty, and the trial was continuing before Mr Justice Tony Hunt and a jury.
