Judge Patrick Quinn suspended a 12-month prison sentence for Patrick O’Reilly at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on condition that he pay €1,000 to the victim. The proceedings were reported on 4 May 2018.

O’Reilly pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Frank Shannon and to unlawful production of a baseball bat during a dispute. The assault took place at the Kiltipper Inn in Tallaght on 8 August 2016.

Garda Cian Steers told the court that O’Reilly struck Shannon several times before others disarmed him. Shannon suffered a full-depth injury to his upper lip, leaving a small permanent scar.

Defence counsel Gaby Dean said O’Reilly had been drinking at the pub when other customers began ridiculing Irish Olympic sailor Annalise Murphy and minority sports. She said he had little memory of the assault but regretted it and was extremely remorseful. Judge Quinn noted his good character and remorse.
