Mr Justice Paul Butler sentenced Patrick O’Brien to 10 years in custody at the Central Criminal Court on 14 June 2018. The sentence was concurrent with the term he was already serving and was backdated to December 2017.

O’Brien pleaded guilty to 15 counts of sexual assault and admitted three counts of committing acts of gross indecency. The proceedings were reported on 14 June 2018.

The offences against a 13-year-old boy took place at O’Brien’s home in Templeogue, Dublin, and other locations in the city between April 2002 and December 2003.

O’Brien was already serving a 13-year sentence imposed in 2016 for the rape and molestation of 14 young boys over 40 years. In 1989, he received a suspended sentence for the sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy in 1982.
