Patrick Nevin and State to appeal 14-year sentence

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Patrick Nevin is to appeal the severity of his 14-year sentence for rape and sexual assault. The State is to argue that the sentence, of which the final two years were suspended, was too lenient.

Nevin pleaded guilty to raping one woman and sexually assaulting a second woman. The rape took place at Bellewstown, County Meath, on 12 July 2014; the sexual assault took place four days later at an unknown location in County Meath.

He had been due to stand trial at the Central Criminal Court but changed his pleas to guilty following a legal ruling allowing the prosecution to introduce evidence from other women describing sexual assaults by Nevin on first dates. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon imposed the 14-year sentence and suspended its final two years.

Nevin was also serving a previously imposed five-and-a-half-year sentence for sexually assaulting a third woman he met on Tinder. That offence took place at the UCD campus on 23 July 2014. He appealed that conviction but later withdrew the appeal.

The proceedings were reported on 18 May 2020. That day, Mr Justice George Birmingham set 30 July 2020 as the date for Nevin's appeal. Both appeals were to be heard remotely on the same date.
