Patrick Brazil was sentenced to eight years, with the final two and a half years suspended, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 12 January 2017 for a string of robberies. He had pleaded guilty to three robbery counts, trespassing and causing criminal damage, and possessing a knife.

The court heard that Brazil used an imitation gun during one robbery on Oxmantown Road, Dublin 7, before being overpowered by an off-duty trainee garda. He had 76 previous convictions, and most of the robberies were committed while he was on bail.

Judge Melanie Greally imposed consecutive sentences and ordered 18 months of probation supervision during the suspended portion. She considered the seriousness of the offences alongside Brazil’s efforts to address alcohol and drug addiction and his community supports.
