Oleksandr Strymbu was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for money laundering at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 3 April 2025. Judge Martin Nolan backdated the sentence to 13 June 2024, when Strymbu went into custody.
Strymbu pleaded guilty to handling €1,058,575 in crime proceeds at his address in Beverly Downs, Knocklyon, Co Dublin, on 13 June 2024. The proceedings were reported on 3 April 2025.
Detective Garda Kate Gilligan told the court that the shared rented house was searched on 13 June 2024. More than €1 million in cash was found in six shopping and gift bags in Strymbu’s bedroom. There was a cash-counting machine on the coffee table, and a further €25,900 was found in an upstairs bedroom.
Strymbu told gardaí he had collected bags for his housemate for a few weeks and left them in his room for collection. He said he did not know how much cash they contained or where it came from. He said he was not paid, but received money for fuel and was taken out for food.
Defence counsel Oisín Clarke described Strymbu as essentially a courier who was low in the money-laundering hierarchy. Judge Nolan called him a “vital cog” in the criminal organisation and said he was at least in the middle of its hierarchy.
The judge set a headline sentence of eight years before imposing five years after considering mitigation. The court also granted an order forfeiting the cash to the State.
