Nigel McEvoy was sentenced for assault causing harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 5 October 2022, receiving 36 months with the final 12 months suspended.

The assault happened at the Mercantile Bar on Dame Street, Dublin, on 24 November 2018. The court heard McEvoy punched Paddy Keogh, 74, and put his foot on the victim’s neck area. Judge Melanie Greally said the attack was violent in the extreme and had life-changing consequences for Keogh, who later developed panic attacks and entered a nursing home. McEvoy had pleaded guilty, and the judge cited his mental-health diagnosis, remorse and other mitigating factors. She directed that a €200 gesture of remorse be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
