Niall Healy has six years of suspended sentence reactivated

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy reactivated six years of Niall Healy’s 10-year suspended sentence on 6 July 2018, backdating the term to June 2015. He suspended the remaining four years on strict conditions.

The suspended term formed part of a 20-year sentence imposed in October 2006 after a Central Criminal Court jury convicted Healy of the aggravated sexual assault and false imprisonment of a woman in July 2001. The final 10 years had been suspended. Healy, then 42 and of no fixed abode, also had a previous rape conviction, for which he received a 12-year sentence in June 1993, with the final six years suspended.

Mr Justice McCarthy heard that, after his release in January 2014, Healy was jailed for two years for robbery. The court heard that he was released again in January 2018 and had since relapsed into drug use, attacked a woman’s car at traffic lights and broken into an unoccupied house.

The judge ordered Healy to undergo drug treatment, anger management, educational and other courses that may be prescribed by the Probation Services in Ireland or the UK. He said the suspended term was intended to protect the community and that he had also considered evidence suggesting Healy was a changed man.
