Mohamed Mahamed was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 30 July 2024 for unlawfully assisting a woman’s entry into Dublin Airport on 28 January 2024. The sentence was backdated to 28 January 2024.

Mahamed pleaded guilty to the offence. The proceedings were reported on 30 July 2024.

The court heard that the woman arrived on a flight from Luxembourg without travel or identity documents. She told immigration officials that she had met Mahamed in Paris and paid him $500 to get to Ireland. She said Mahamed gave her another person’s passport and told her to leave it in the plane toilet so she could arrive without documents and claim international protection.

Mahamed said a third party had offered him money to help get the woman into Ireland. He told gardaí he needed money to visit his family in Somalia and was receiving disability benefit in Denmark. The court heard that he had been told the woman was in ill health and needed medical treatment in Ireland.

Defence counsel Niall Storan BL submitted a psychological report detailing Mahamed’s PTSD following his childhood experiences during the civil war in Somalia. Psychologists described him as easily manipulated. Judge Orla Crowe said the report made for grim reading and that he clearly had PTSD. She said he had acted for financial gain and played an active role in a sophisticated operation. She reduced a three-year headline sentence because of his personal circumstances.
