Michael Lynn was jailed for five and a half years for stealing more than €18m from financial institutions at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 19 February 2024.

He had been convicted of ten theft offences after a trial, having denied 21 counts concerning almost €30m taken between October 2006 and April 2007. Judge Martin Nolan set an overall sentence of 13 years and credited Lynn with seven and a half years for time spent in a Brazilian prison while contesting extradition.

The judge said Lynn exploited gaps in how banks checked whether properties were already charged. He accepted that Lynn thought he could repay the money, while describing the amount involved as serious. A confiscation application concerning property and bank accounts was due to be heard on 16 April.
