Michael Kinsella pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court on 10 December 2015.
Adil Essalhi was killed in Tyrrellstown, west Dublin, on 6 January 2011.
Kinsella had pleaded not guilty to murder, but admitted unlawfully killing Mr Essalhi after a five-day trial.
The State prosecution told the court that the DPP would accept the manslaughter plea only on condition that Kinsella agreed he had assaulted Mr Essalhi with a weapon.
Mr Essalhi suffered more than 50 stab and chop wounds before his body was burned and left in a ditch.
Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy said Kinsella would be sentenced “in due course.”
