Martin Maughan received a 20-month prison sentence for assault causing harm and criminal damage at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 3 March 2023. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence.

The offences occurred at an address in Santry on 8 February 2020. Maughan pleaded guilty to both charges.

The report said the victim was five months pregnant and suffered soft tissue injuries to her arms, head and shoulder area. It described an attack involving punching, kicking and whipping her with an electric cord.

The investigating garda accepted that Maughan's previous convictions were not similar to this incident, that he had not come to garda attention between 2011 and 2018, and that he had an issue with alcohol. Defence counsel said Maughan had apologised, accepted the seriousness of the incident, and had alcohol and mental-health difficulties. Judge Nolan treated the guilty plea and remorse as mitigating factors.

The proceedings were reported on 3 March 2023.
