Mark Whelan was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder at the Central Criminal Court on 17 December 2021.

The murder took place at his home in Castlecurragh Heath, Mulhuddart, on 30 March 2019.

A jury had convicted Whelan after rejecting his defence that intoxication left him unable to form the intent to kill.

The judge said Whelan was responsible for his continued drug use, which had led to a drug-induced psychosis.

She described the violence as immense and said Noel Whelan had been killed for no reason.

Whelan’s daughter said her life had been ruined by the killing and that her partner would never meet their child.
