Stardust survivor Mark Swaine described trying to extinguish flames at the Dublin District Coroner’s Court inquest on 19 October 2023.

Swaine said he used his hands and arms to try to put out flames on people escaping the fire. He also tried to break windows after seeing hands pressed against them, but said wrought iron bars prevented people from getting out that way.

Barrister Des Fahy KC called Swaine’s actions brave. Swaine replied that, at the time, it seemed normal to him.
