Mark Nash's murder conviction upheld after appeal dismissed

By Orla Quinn

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Mark Nash's murder conviction was upheld after the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal on 8 May 2018. The conviction concerned the murders of Sylvia Sheils and Mary Callanan in Grangegorman, Dublin.

The three-judge court found that Nash's trial had been entirely fair and that the verdict was well justified by the evidence. It rejected all grounds of appeal, including challenges concerning his admissions and scientific evidence about DNA contamination.

The court said the scientific evidence did not conclusively prove or disprove contamination, but there was sufficient justification for the jury to decide that DNA profiles on Nash's jacket were present from the time of the murders. Nash was not in court for delivery of the judgment.
