Mark Egan was sentenced to three years in prison, with the final two years suspended on strict conditions. Judge Melanie Greally backdated the sentence to 17 January 2020, when he first went into custody.
Egan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two burglaries and one attempted burglary at Bishop Street, Dublin 8, on 28 May 2019. The proceedings were reported on 30 June 2020.
Garda Greg Moroney said Egan stole laptops worth €4,700 from one company and money from another. A third company's offices were ransacked, but nothing was taken. The report said Egan took responsibility after seeing himself on CCTV and that medication had prevented him recalling the burglaries.
Egan asked to remain in Mountjoy Prison to finish a drugs course that had two months remaining, after Judge Greally indicated she planned to re-admit him to bail. She commended his responsible attitude and agreed to finalise sentencing.
The judge noted that Egan had relapsed shortly after release on a 12-month probation bond, but had then undergone a successful period of supervision. She said he had made efforts to address his addiction, which she described as his principal risk factor.
