Mariusz Karpinski gets suspended sentence for careless driving death
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Mariusz Karpinski received a fully suspended one-year sentence for careless driving causing the death of cyclist Mark Hayden at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 15 March 2023. He pleaded guilty to the charge. Judge Martin Nolan did not disqualify him from driving.
The collision happened near Kilshane Cross in north County Dublin on 4 May 2021. The report said Karpinski had been driving into very strong sunlight and had not seen Hayden cycling to his left; the defence cited evidence that the cyclist was visible for about two seconds before impact and that a truck became practically undetectable in the same shade.
The proceedings were reported on 16 March 2023.
