Marian Lingurar Jnr had his manslaughter sentence reduced by one year at the Court of Appeal in a judgment delivered on 4 April 2022. The offence took place at Kenny’s pub in Oughterard, Co Galway, in 2011.
Lingurar was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment after a jury convicted him of manslaughter at Galway Circuit Criminal Court in January 2019. He appealed the severity of the sentence, arguing that insufficient weight had been given to his age at the time of the offence.
The Court of Appeal quashed the sentence imposed in May 2019 and reduced the term by one year. The judgment said the 10-year headline sentence was outside the appropriate range for a 16-year-old, while noting that Lingurar had not taken part in the restraint or assault.
