Craig Maples, who was already serving a seven-year sentence for violent disorder and assault causing serious harm, received a two-year-and-three-month prison sentence for assaulting his housemate. The proceedings were reported on 11 March 2025.
Maples pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing harm to his housemate. The assault took place at an address in Huntstown, Dublin 15, on 2 January 2020.
Judge Orla Crowe backdated the sentence to when Maples entered his guilty plea. She described the attack as brutal and unjustified, saying the housemate had been entitled to rent a room and had asked him to keep the peace.
The court heard that Maples kicked down the housemate’s bedroom door after returning with two other men. The three assaulted him, leaving him with head wounds and an injured arm. In a victim impact statement, the housemate said he was left homeless and unable to work for a lengthy period, and later emigrated to Croatia.
Maples’s existing seven-year sentence concerned an assault on Austin Doherty on Main Street, Mulhuddart, on 21 July 2022. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court had heard that Mr Doherty suffered a traumatic brain injury and significant impairments.
