A man who cannot be named for legal reasons received a fully suspended 12-month sentence for coercive control after pleading guilty to that offence and assault causing harm. The Central Circuit Criminal Court imposed a concurrent six-month sentence for the assault and suspended the 12-month term in full on strict conditions for two years.
The court heard that the couple had an arranged marriage in 2019 and lived in Dublin. The woman’s food intake and home heating were restricted, and she was isolated in the house. The assault followed a verbal altercation on or about January 27, 2020, when the man grabbed her arm and twisted it behind her back, causing pain, swelling and bruising. The judge accepted that the assault was not premeditated.
