Constantin Iosca was jailed for two years and nine months after a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury convicted him of dishonestly inducing the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland to investigate a fraudulent personal injury claim. He had claimed compensation after alleging a car knocked him from his bicycle in 2016, injuring his back, left leg and right arm. CCTV gathered during the insurer’s investigation showed him getting in and out of a wheelchair and walking unaided; he withdrew the claim after the footage was played in the High Court in 2020.
Judge Patricia Ryan imposed a three-year-and-six-month sentence, suspending the final nine months on strict conditions for three years after release. She treated the High Court summons and Iosca’s previous convictions as aggravating factors, while taking account of his medical issues and the time since his last offence. The court heard he had 19 previous summary convictions. The MIBI said the sentence was a victory against insurance fraud.
