The man who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity was jailed for four years for two counts of child cruelty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with the sentence hearing taking place on 14 October 2022.

Judge Pauline Codd imposed four years on each count, to run concurrently, and ordered that credit be given for time already served. The man was found guilty by a jury after a trial and still maintains his innocence. The proceedings were reported on 15 October 2022.

The toddler was hospitalised for two days after suffering extensive bruising in February 2017. The defence highlighted the man’s history of drug abuse, the death of a close friend, his relationship with his children and a positive prison letter; his barrister also said he was a father of five and that none of his children had been harmed.
