This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Kevin Geraghty was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to assault causing harm to a Spanish student in Dublin city centre. The student, who had recently arrived in Ireland to study English, suffered a broken jaw and required surgery. Judge Orla Crowe described the attack as completely unprovoked and said it had distinct homophobic overtones.

The assault happened on Cuffe Street in the early hours of 19 September 2024. Geraghty punched the student several times after two men approached him outside a bar and shouted homophobic slurs. The judge said the slurs might not have been uttered by Geraghty, but they had been shouted and he had punched the student. The court heard Geraghty had 70 previous convictions. Judge Crowe set a sentence of three years and nine months, suspending the final nine months on conditions.
