A 31-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison, with the final 18 months suspended, for raping a woman he was dating. Mr Justice Paul Butler sentenced him at the Central Criminal Court on 12 March 2018.
A jury convicted the man of raping the woman at her Dublin apartment on 23 November 2014. He gave evidence at the trial and denied raping her.
The court heard that the woman had said she was not interested in sex without a condom. The man penetrated her and stopped after she told him he was raping her.
Mr Justice Butler said the case fell into one of the lowest categories of rape cases he had encountered, adding that he did not mean to denigrate it. He said the offence appeared to have had an appalling effect on the woman. He suspended the final 18 months because of the man’s lack of other offending and prior good behaviour.
