The Central Criminal Court sentenced a 36-year-old man to 10 years’ imprisonment, with the final year suspended for three years, after he was convicted of sexually assaulting his partner and raping and threatening to kill her. The suspended year was conditional on probation supervision and completion of recommended courses or therapies. The court heard he had more than 70 previous convictions, none for sexual offences.
The offences included a sexual assault at his home on February 7th, 2022, and rape, sexual assault and threats to kill at a Dublin hotel. The judge treated their intimate relationship, the severe impact on the woman, the degradation and the abuse of trust as aggravating factors. He set an 11-year headline sentence before accounting for mitigating and personal circumstances.
The woman told the court the crimes had changed her life. She described washing her skin with bleach and living in fear. The man maintained that he did not accept the verdicts, according to his defence counsel.
