Man jailed for child sexual abuse offences after appeal

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The man was ordered to serve six years for child sexual abuse offences by the Court of Appeal on 29 November 2021. Mr Justice John Edwards presided with Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy and Ms Justice Una Ní Raifeartaigh. The earlier five-year term imposed at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in April 2019 was quashed as unduly lenient.

He pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a boy, sexual exploitation of a boy and producing child pornography, and admitted two child-pornography possession offences. The proceedings were reported on 29 November 2021. The Court of Appeal refused parents’ request to identify him, retaining the naming ban because disclosure could identify the victims.

The report records defence agreement that he had been held in the Philippines from 2015 until his return to Ireland, while another account described that return as deportation rather than extradition.
